Scorpio Tankers’ report of zero material cybersecurity incidents in 2025 is worth reading as a measure of preparation rather than simply a clean result.
The tanker owner is connecting more systems across its vessels and shore operations, including AI-enabled navigation technology and digital training. That creates a wider flow of operational and personal data, making cybersecurity part of fleet management rather than an IT issue sitting separately from operations.
The lesson for other shipowners is that connected ships need controls that cover the whole data path. Scorpio’s approach combines penetration testing of shore and vessel systems, threat monitoring, employee training, data protection rules and an internal AI policy.
That matters as ships gain more software, connectivity and automated functions. A cyber incident can affect operational systems, sensitive information and the decisions made by people ashore and onboard.
Zero incidents are useful, but the more important measure is whether an owner has built the systems, responsibilities and training needed before something goes wrong. Scorpio’s framework provides a practical example of what that can look like.
