The best digital strategy still starts with understanding the people who have to use it.

Captain Robin Wulf’s experience gives today’s lead a perspective that is often missing from conversations about maritime technology. He has worked at sea before widespread digital navigation and has seen what technology has removed from the workload as well as what it has added.
That experience matters because shipowners and managers can assess a system from the shore while crews experience its consequences every day. A tool that removes repetitive work can make life easier. A system that adds another layer of monitoring can do the opposite.
Wulf’s warning about blindly trusting ECDIS and AIS also matters. Digital systems can process more information than a person can manage manually. They still need people who can recognise when the information does not make sense.
Ask crews what a technology changes before deciding what it delivers. The people using the system can often see risks and practical problems that are invisible from shore. Good technology should give seafarers more time for judgement rather than asking them to surrender it.
