Editor’s Note

What does a shipowner actually buy when the invoice says digitalisation?

Not the platform and not the analysts. The purchase is a promise that somewhere down the line a vessel will burn less or sail fewer empty miles or pass a survey without a stack of paper on the bridge. Until that happens the money sits in a shore office waiting to become useful.

The executives who get this right treat every digital project as an operational commitment rather than a technology one.

Today’s Headline Story

André Panosian, Data Scientist at CMA CGM’s Digital Hub in Lebanon, writing software that removes thousands of tonnes of CO₂ from a container fleet is a small story on its face. It matters because it describes the point at which shipping's digital ambition either becomes real or stays theoretical.

Sensors and reporting mandates have produced more operational information than most companies can use. What has been missing is a reliable path from that information to a decision that changes how a ship is run. André Panosian's account of his early work at CMA CGM's Digital Hub describes that path being built. His code was written to influence the operation of large vessels and its success was measured in emissions avoided rather than features delivered.

This is where much of shipping's digital investment has stalled. Companies have bought platforms and hired analysts and then found the results stranded in reports that never reached the bridge or the chartering desk. The distance between a shore office and a vessel is organisational before it is technical. Performance data sits with technical departments while commercial decisions are made elsewhere and the software is rarely trusted to connect the two.

CMA CGM's example also carries a point about people. Panosian speaks of the work as meaningful because the outcome is tangible. Retaining technical talent in a maritime setting has proved difficult when the work resembles reporting rather than operations. A digital hub that lets an engineer watch a fleet change course because of his model is a stronger recruitment argument than any salary.

Emissions regulation makes this urgent. CII ratings and the EU ETS have turned fuel efficiency into a balance sheet item. The companies that will manage that exposure well are those where data science holds an operational mandate rather than an advisory one. That is the shift this account points to and it is one most fleet owners have yet to complete.
