AI is moving rapidly into fleet operations, but the more important issue for shipowners is deciding where it genuinely earns its place.
Nicolas Timpelis, IT Projects Support Manager at Ionic, makes a distinction that matters for an industry facing a flood of AI products. “We do not invest because something is labelled 'AI'. We invest when it solves a real operational problem and delivers measurable value.”
That is the issue many shipowners now face. AI can support voyage optimisation, emissions reporting and predictive maintenance, yet the technology is only as reliable as the information feeding it. Shipping companies still hold operational data across different platforms, databases and, in some cases, paper records. Without a reliable data foundation, even sophisticated systems can produce poor recommendations.
Digital transformation cannot be measured by how much technology a fleet has installed. It should be measured by whether people make better decisions, whether operations become safer and more efficient, and whether the results can be trusted.
Timpelis puts the point: “The AI projects that succeed are not necessarily the most sophisticated ones. They are the ones that solve real operational problems, fit naturally into existing workflows, and, most importantly, earn the trust of the people using them every day.”
That makes the story particularly relevant to executives deciding where to spend their next technology budget. The industry does not need more AI for its own sake. It needs better evidence that AI can work within real fleet operations.
