Singapore’s maritime innovation strategy offers one answer: connect technology developers with operational problems, industry partners and the investment needed to make their solutions work. The lesson from today’s stories is that tools deliver value when they fit the way ships are actually managed, giving people better information to make better decisions.
For the shipping industry, the challenge is creating an operating environment where useful technology can take hold.

Singapore’s startup strategy raises a bigger issue for shipowners than the number of companies it has supported. What matters is what happens after a technology leaves the pilot stage and becomes part of daily operations.
More than 170 startups have gone through PIER71, but the stronger figure is the more than 30 solutions already deployed in the industry. That gap matters. It shows that the hard part is not finding new technology. It is creating a route from an idea to a working system that operators are willing and able to use.
Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Chief Digital Officer Thomas Ting’s comments also touch on a familiar weakness in shipping. Operators often have to prioritise immediate operational needs, leaving less room for technologies whose returns may take years to emerge.
Singapore’s approach is worth watching because it connects startups with actual maritime users. Digitalisation becomes more useful when technology is tested against the realities of vessels, ports and commercial operations, rather than developed in isolation. That connection between technology providers and the people running maritime operations may be what turns more promising ideas into tools that actually get used.
