Digitalisation earns its place onboard when it makes work simpler, not when it adds another layer to manage.

The harder task is making data, equipment, compliance and procurement work together in ways that owners can actually use. That puts greater weight on how technology is introduced and governed, and on whether the information produced can support better commercial and environmental decisions.

The technology may be available, but its usefulness still comes down to what happens after it reaches the vessel.

Today’s Headline Story

Cetus Maritime’s Tabitha Logan gets to the heart of a problem that sits underneath much of the industry’s digital investment: shipowners can have better connectivity and more software without necessarily having better information.

That makes her perspective particularly relevant as fleets take on more systems for fuel optimisation, emissions compliance, cybersecurity and crew connectivity. The difficulty is not simply installing those tools. It is making them work together without creating more manual work for the people onboard.

Her comments also bring a useful discipline to the discussion. Logan says Cetus is looking at how its connectivity can produce actionable insights from proven engine optimisation while reducing administrative work for crews. That puts the operator, rather than the technology, at the centre of the decision.

Her warning about data interoperability is just as important. If information remains trapped across legacy and new systems, the owner can end up with more data but less usable intelligence. The same problem can extend beyond the vessel, particularly where ships and ports operate with different systems and levels of digital maturity.
