Shipbuilding is part of the energy-transition equation. The ability to build, retrofit and manage increasingly complex vessels will determine how quickly decarbonisation moves from ambition to deployment.

That puts pressure on shipyards to modernise not only their facilities but also the way engineering, production and vessel data work together.

Technology delivers value only when the industry has the capacity to integrate it. From shipyard optimisation to onboard intelligence and new battery systems, execution is the critical link between maritime ambition and measurable progress.

Today’s Headline Story

The maritime industry has spent much of its decarbonisation effort looking outward — towards alternative fuels, new propulsion systems, vessel design and regulation. Miska Merikukka of Elomatic Marine asks us to look somewhere less obvious: the shipyard. That is where many of the industry's transition ambitions ultimately have to become steel, machinery and working vessels.

This is more than a question of whether shipyards can build a vessel to a new specification. The transition is introducing complex projects that require yards to integrate new fuel systems, accommodate retrofit work and coordinate engineering and production in ways that older facilities and workflows were not designed to handle. He references to ageing infrastructure, skilled-labour shortages, fragmented supply chains and limited digital integration shows why simply investing in more capacity will not necessarily produce the capacity the industry actually needs.

That perspective connects naturally with the recently published DNV's 2026 Maritime Forecast to 2050. DNV estimates that stronger adoption of energy-efficiency measures could leave the global fleet using up to 25% less energy by 2050 than under a transition driven mainly by regional regulation. Its outlook also places digitalisation, performance monitoring and fleet management alongside fuels and technical measures.

There is an important parallel here. If DNV's outlook tells us that shipping will need to extract greater efficiency from the vessels already operating, the lead tells us that the industry must also extract greater efficiency from the systems that produce and maintain those vessels. Better data, integrated planning and digital workflows are not simply productivity tools. They can determine whether new technologies can be deployed at the scale and speed the transition demands.

Net zero is an execution problem. Technology may provide the direction, but shipyards provide much of the means. The yards that can turn complex designs into repeatable production, manage first-of-a-kind projects and progressively improve their processes could become just as important to the energy transition as the technologies being installed on board.
