Digital Ship Daily: Exclusive Interview with Helen Mohan on Maritime Connectivity; VoyageX AI Debuts; Maranics Expands to the Americas; ABS Certifies AI Navigation; DHL-Hapag Pact for Cleaner Seas

Helen Mohan, a veteran IT consultant, tackled one of maritime’s biggest challenges: reliable vessel connectivity. Her solution blended Starlink, VSAT, GSM, and LEO services into one continuous connection.
“I want the internet to work wherever the ship is... I don't want to be buying the equipment. I want [vendors] to provide it,” said Mohan.
Why it matters: The shift has made “always-on” vessels a reality and inspired satellite providers to adopt combined service models, transforming shipboard communications and crew connectivity….read more

Today’s DS Daily is presented by KVH
Speed + Reliability, Together
Shipowners shouldn’t have to choose between speed and reliability at sea. KVH combines the best of both. With Starlink’s affordability and OneWeb’s low-latency global coverage, KVH delivers enterprise-grade connectivity tailored for maritime. Add in advanced bandwidth management, flexible data plans, and global support, and you have connectivity without compromise.
As the maritime sector pushes toward sustainability, VoyageX AI is offering a unified digital platform to optimize routes, automate compliance, and forecast congestion.
“Digital transformation is not only a competitive advantage — it is a policy imperative,” said Manish Gupta of VoyageX AI.
Big picture: By linking automation and sustainability, VoyageX aims to help ship operators bridge the gap between regulation and real-world operations….read more

Where operational excellence meets net zero ambition
Hapag-Lloyd and DHL Global Forwarding have signed a three-year deal to cut emissions in ocean freight using sustainable marine fuels. Their first collaboration avoided 25,000 tons of CO₂e using second-generation biofuels made from waste.
“Together, we are creating real momentum in further decarbonizing supply chains, one bold step at a time,” said Danny Smolders, Managing Director Global Sales at Hapag-Lloyd.
Why it matters: The deal showcases how major logistics players are turning climate pledges into measurable action. Both firms are targeting net-zero operations by 2045 and 2050, respectively, and using a book-and-claim system to help customers cut indirect emissions….read more
Autonomous navigation took a major step forward as AVIKUS Co., Ltd. earned an ABS statement of compliance verifying fuel savings from its HiNAS Control system. The AI-driven platform, developed with HMM and the Liberian Registry, optimizes routes and speed to reduce fuel use by up to 5%.
“A 4 to 5% fuel savings is not an incremental improvement; for a global fleet, it represents a fundamental shift,” said Dohyeong Lim, AVIKUS CEO.
The takeaway: With backing from major shipping and classification players, AI-assisted navigation is moving from theory to verified reality….read more
