Digital Ship Daily: Exclusive Interview with the CEO of Anglo Eastern Ship Management

The voice of IT Leadership in the commercial maritime industry

(L-R) Nick Chubb, Founder and Strategy Director of Thetius; Bjørn Højgaard, CEO of Anglo-Eastern Ship Management and Raal Harris Director, Founder PitchFrame.

Anglo-Eastern CEO Bjørn Højgaard says maritime’s biggest transformation isn’t just digital; it’s cultural. What he said: “You have to balance your sense of urgency, jumping at the opportunity, but sometimes slowing down, learning, and absorbing before you move.” His leadership philosophy blends confidence with humility, forged during the Univan-Anglo-Eastern merger.

On technology, Højgaard called low Earth orbit satellites a “game changer” that will redefine how crews communicate and make decisions.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵: He warns not to mistake connectivity for control. “We can remote-control a lot of things, but the authority to make decisions—you have to make sure we don’t take that away from the ships.”

Joy Basu, Smart Ship Hub’s Chief Executive Officer

Smart Ship© Hub CEO Joy Basu has seen maritime shift from treating technology as a “nice to have” to making it core to survival.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀: The explosion of vessel data has turned limited, unreliable inputs into high-quality streams powering “micro-decision making” that can save millions.

“Even with a 2% deviation across 50 vessels, we are looking at a million tons of carbon footprint and a few million dollars of real dollar value impact,” said Basu. He’s calling on maritime CIOs to strengthen data infrastructure and transparency through “Lighthouse Projects” that share what’s working and what isn’t.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: With younger, tech-savvy owners rising and AI on the horizon, Basu says innovation must start “with the people at the helm.”….read more
