What’s the story: The European Council is pushing for greater investment in clean and digital technologies to strengthen Europe’s maritime and shipbuilding competitiveness.

The Waterborne Technology Platform (Waterborne TP) says collaboration is key. “Pooling public and private resources towards research, development, innovation and its deployment will be key for the sustainable transition of the waterborne sector,” said Jaap Gebraad, Secretary General of Waterborne TP.

What’s the story: DP World has rolled out a new Port Community System (PCS) in Kenya, modernising trade at the Port of Mombasa. Built with EMEA Port Logistics and the Kenya Ports Authority, the system digitises how cargo is tracked, booked, and cleared, reducing delays by up to 30%.

“Digitisation is no longer optional; it’s essential for unlocking the full potential of African trade,” said Mahmood Albastaki, COO of Digital Trade Solutions at DP World. Jack Rono, Director of EMEA Port Logistics, called it “a connected and transparent ecosystem that benefits all players in the trade chain.”

What’s the story: In a breakthrough for inland shipping, the river cruiser MS Lumière completed the world’s first autonomous Dock2Dock voyage between Hardinxveld-Giessendam and Gorinchem. Developed by Shipping Technology, Retina, and Scylla, the demonstration proved safe autonomy is already here.

“With the Dock2Dock project, we’re proving that autonomous technology is no longer futuristic—it’s happening now,” said David Woudenberg, Head of Product Development at Shipping Technology. Retina Founder Tom Panjer added, “Reliable data is essential, but people must stay in control.”

What’s the story: Singapore and China have signed an MoU to create a Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC). The agreement, signed by Jeffrey Siow, Singapore’s Acting Minister for Transport, and Liu Wei, China’s Minister of Transport, expands earlier port-level partnerships to a national framework.

According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the corridor will advance decarbonisation, enhance supply-chain efficiency, and develop shared standards for greener shipping.
