More than 91 % of Europe’s marine environment is affected by continuous noise from commercial vessels, yet underwater radiated noise remains one of the least regulated pressures on marine ecosystems. Despite growing awareness of its impact on marine life, from behavioural disruption to interference with feeding and mating, the global fleet remains largely unequipped to address this invisible pollutant.
Elomatic, an international consulting and engineering company headquartered in Finland, is seeking to close this gap by focusing on design-phase interventions that prevent underwater noise before a vessel ever enters service.
