Between regulatory updates and vendor pitches, your inbox is probably bursting with maritime tech news, so we're cutting through the noise to bring you something different - insights from the people implementing these solutions.

This week, I sat down with Mike Michaloliakos, Group Head of ICT and Cyber Security at TMS. He's responsible for the digital transformation of a 130+ vessel fleet. In our conversation, he talked me through his approach to making transformation a success.

Mike Michaloliakos, Group Head of ICT and Cyber Security at TMS.

The maritime industry is in the midst of a digital overhaul—ditching paper, outdated systems, and low-frequency data for cutting-edge software and real-time insights.

It’s a necessary leap forward, but let’s be honest—it’s not for the faint-hearted. Overhauling an entire fleet's digital solutions is enough to overwhelm even the most seasoned industry leaders.

Enter Michalis Michaloliakos (Mike), Group Head of ICT and Cyber Security at TMS.

With over 13 years of ICT and Cyber experience under his belt, Michaloliakos is currently steering the company’s digital transformation journey. This is no easy feat considering TMS manages over 130 vessels across tanker, gas, and dry bulk sectors through its global network of offices, with another 45 vessels currently under construction.

"It's crucial to identify solutions that match an organisation's DNA - the people working there and their culture."

Are You Overpaying For IT? Let’s Find Out.

Let's be honest…does anyone in shipping know what they should be paying for their IT? With every other vendor claiming their solution is 'competitively priced' and every maritime tech contract reading like it was written in ancient Greek, how can anyone be sure they're not overpaying? Even worse - how do you know if your underpayments are affecting performance?

The Thetius IT Cost Benchmarking Club takes the guesswork out of maritime technology spending. Thetius analyses your costs, compares them anonymously with other shipowners, and gives you clear insights into whether you're getting good value. From vessel cybersecurity to crew training platforms, we'll help you understand if those fancy features are worth the extra zeros. Because in an industry that's rapidly becoming more digitalised by the day, transparency is key!

According to Mike, the path to successful digital transformation in maritime begins long before any vendor discussions.

"It's crucial to identify solutions that match an organisation's DNA - the people working there and their culture." This means taking a step back to understand your company's unique operational landscape and workforce dynamics. Furthermore, "You need to create a comprehensive plan to identify needs and involve the business owners from the very beginning of the project."

By bringing key stakeholders into the conversation early, companies can ensure their digital investments align with actual operational needs rather than just following the latest industry trends.

"Shipping companies think it's all about technology, but it's actually 20% technology, 20% process, and 60% people."

The maritime industry's drive towards digital transformation has sparked an important conversation about the balance between technology and human factors.

As Mike points out, "Shipping companies think it's all about technology, but it's actually 20% technology, 20% process, and 60% people." This observation cuts to the heart of a crucial challenge facing maritime organisations today. He continued to say, "Many companies invest in new solutions, but employee utilisation remains minimal.

“Success depends on the people using the solution, not just the solution itself." It's a timely reminder that while technological advancement is essential, the human element remains the key driver of successful digital transformation in shipping.

Finally, both you and your vendor have got to remain flexible! With vessels constantly on the move and crews rotating out every few months, it’s a mammoth task to implement new software on a single vessel, let alone an entire fleet!

When implementing digital solutions across a global fleet, you need vendors who can match your operational footprint.

Mike advised looking for partners who can deliver "follow-the-sun" implementation - meaning they can provide support and service regardless of where vessels are located.

It's not just about having the right technology; it's about having partners who can deploy it effectively across multiple time zones and locations.

Just remember…plans will change and dates will inevitably slip but it’s not the end of the world, you’ll get there eventually, and it’ll all be worth it in the end.
